รังสี IR เป็นคลื่นแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้าที่ตาคนมองไม่เห็น แต่รับรู้ได้ในรูปของความร้อนการแผ่รังสี อินฟราเรดเป็นหนึ่งในสามวิธีของการเดินทางของความร้อนจากจุดหนึ่งไปอีกจุดหนึ่ง เราแบ่งแยกเป็น

1. IR คลื่นสั้น ความยาวคลื่นตั้งแต่ 780-1,400 mm
2. IR คลื่น ความยาวคลื่นตั้งแต่ 1,400-3,000 mm
3. IR คลื่นยาว ความยาวคลื่นตั้งแต่ 3,000-10,000 mm

ความยาวคลื่น (Wave length) มีหน่วยนับเป็นนาโนเมตร (1 Nano-Meter=10⁹   -Meter) และมีค่าผกผันกลับค่าของความถี่ Frequency
